Radical Unity - 5 | Genesis 1: 26-30

This reflection explores humanity’s calling to participate with God rather than simply observe His rule, showing throughout Scripture that God repeatedly invites His creation to walk, work, and make decisions alongside Him. It points to Christ as the bridge that restores the unity lost in Eden, allowing us once again to live in the relationship for which we were created—walking with God, talking with God, and ultimately becoming His dwelling place.

Today I am reading Genesis one, verses twenty-six through thirty. Then God said, Let us make human beings in our image to be like us. They will reign over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, and all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground. So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them, male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and he said, Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and govern it, reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground. Then God said, Look, I have given you every seed bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food, and have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground, everything that has life, and that is what happened.

The call on humanity was not I am the king of the world, so you just watch me rule the earth. We are blessed to be the hand of God, not because he needs someone to do it for him, but because he wants to share in the joy of his creation with his creation. It's a pattern found throughout the scriptures. From God calling people or angels to deliver messages, like all the prophets, to inviting divine beings to offer opinion on how to handle a lost king, like in 2 Kings 22, even to the point of allowing humanity to change his mind on how punishment is executed on itself, like in Jonah or in Genesis 18. God has desired his creation to participate with him from page one of the scriptures. So much so that he would look at the cost of our inability, know the impossibility of our ability to pay it, and offer himself as payment. But to be able to rule with him, one must of course be with him. We were created to be a conduit of the power of God. It's no wonder the draw of human power overwhelms so many people. The gap that's left when we reject God's power is an unfillable void. So when we try to fill it with the world, it should come as no surprise that there is a never ending need for more. And so Christ came as the bridge back to real unification with the Father, something humanity sacrificed in Eden, so that we can once again truly live up to the design God laid out. To walk with him, to talk with him, and to make decisions with him. He is the ultimate expression of unity, choosing to humble himself so that he can once again live not just with us, but in us as his temple.

Teach me to surrender my desire for control and to trust your power, rather than trying to fill the space that only you can fill. Through Christ, draw me back into deeper unity with you, so that I might walk with you, listen for you, and become a vessel for your presence in the world.
