Today I'm reading Jeremiah twenty nine verses four through seven. This is what the Lord of Heaven's armies, the God of Israel, says to the captives he has exiled to Babylon from Jerusalem. Build homes and plan to stay, plant gardens and eat the food they produce. Marry and have children, then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren, multiply, do not dwindle away, and work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile.

Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare would determine your welfare. In yesterday's attention on remaining firm to our faith in a land that does not share our faith, we touched on something in the background of the story being told.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were all managers of the province of Babylon, and Daniel was still a highly trusted council member of King Nebuchadnezzar, all of them actively serving a people group who would rejoice to see the Jewish culture wiped out or enslaved. Later in Daniel chapter nine, Daniel reads this very passage, which is a letter from Jeremiah to the exiles, although his eyes were on the number of years that Israel would remain in exile. While God gave his people into the hands of this superpower of the age, he did not send them with destructive intent. He calls them to thrive, to not just survive in the city until the promised return comes, to pursue the well being of the city, pray on their behalf, build houses, plant gardens, get married, multiply. That sounds a lot like the original call God placed on humanity at creation. Jeremiah's letter was not directed at us, but its lessons still ring with eternal truth. True, God has not called us to be violent conquerors, but neither has he called us to be cloisters of hidden people. His desire has always been that his people would live and thrive in whatever place they're found, serving and seeking the well being of people who may hold destructive intent. We have been blessed that the cities many of us reside in are not the hostile territory of Babylon, and the people Jeremiah wrote to did not have the light of Jesus to call upon as we do. So then how much greater a call is it upon us to not hide, but to thrive and serve in the city and culture we're placed in.

Where might God be inviting me to move beyond simply protecting myself and actively seek the good of the people and place He's given me? Father, thank you for placing us where you have and for calling us to be a blessing wherever we go. Give us courage to live openly and faithfully in the places you've planted us, seeking the good of our neighbors and serving even those who may not share our faith. Keep us from hiding in fear or compromising our convictions, and teach us to thrive in a way that makes your goodness visible.
