Today I'm reading Revelation twenty one, verses one through three. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared, and the sea was also gone. Then I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne saying, Look, God's home is now among his people. He will live with them, and they will be his people.

God himself will be with them. What makes a place feel like home?

The room can be ordinary, the furniture can be worn. Nothing about the place has to impress a stranger, but someone you love is waiting inside and suddenly it feels different. Revelation gives us a glimpse of a day when the presence of God will change everything. In the midst of John's revelation, he sees the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God prepared like a bride adored for her husband. The city is coming down from heaven. God does not simply take his people away from the world. He makes all things new and comes to dwell with them. Then Jonathan a loud voice from the throne saying, Look, God's dwelling is with humanity, and he will live with them, and they'll be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. And there it is, the promise underneath every other promise. God with us. The Bible begins with God walking among his people in the garden. It moves through tabernacle and temple, through prophets and promises until God Himself comes near in Jesus. And here at the end of all things, the distance is gone completely. God dwells with his people, and his people dwell with him. There's no longer a need to wonder whether he's near, no need to search for his presence, no need to fear losing what we've been given. He's there. Perhaps that's what we've been longing for all along. Not simply a better world, but a world where God is fully present. Not simply the end of loneliness or division, but the fullness of belonging that comes when God Himself is at home among his people. John doesn't give us many details about what the day will look like.

He gives us something better. He tells us who will be there. God himself. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with.
