Prayed For - 13 | Ephesians 4:1–6

Today I'm reading Ephesians four, one through six. Therefore, I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you've been called by God. Always be humble and gentle, be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one spirit, just as you've been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.

A little distance here, a disagreement that never quite gets resolved, a preference that becomes more important than the person standing across from us. None of it feels significant at first, but given enough time, small things can become walls. Paul seems to understand how easily this happens. After spending the first three chapters of Ephesians describing what God has done in Christ, he begins chapter four with an appeal. Therefore I urge you to live worthy of the calling you've received, and he immediately turns toward the relationships that make up the body of Christ. With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love. None of these qualities sound particularly impressive. They show up in conversations where we could have insisted on being right, moments where someone else's weakness tests our patience, and relationships where love asks us as a present instead of walking away. Then Paul gives the reason. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. He does not tell us to create unity. He tells us to keep it. The unity already exists because God made us one in Christ. Our task is to recognize its value and refuse to treat it carelessly. We protect what we've already been given. That should change the way we think about disagreement. Not every difference needs to disappear. Paul himself knows that the church is made up of different people with different gifts. Unity is not sameness. It's a shared life rooted in one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. Sometimes preserving that unity requires us to lay down the need to win. Sometimes it means listening longer than we want to. Sometimes it means choosing patience when we could choose distance.

The unity of God's people is precious because it tells the truth about the God who brought us together. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. What might I need to lay down in order to protect the unity Christ has given to his people?

Father, thank you for making us one in Christ. Give me the humility, gentleness, and patience to protect the unity you've given your people. Help me value peace more than being right, and love more than being understood.
