Today I'm reading Psalm one thirty three How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live in harmony together for harmony is as precious as the anointing oil that was poured over Aaron's head, that ran down his beard and onto the border of his robe. Harmony is as refreshing as the dew from Mount Hermon that falls in the mountains of Zion, and there the Lord has pronounced his blessing, even life everlasting.

The quiet house after a long day, the feeling around a table when everyone belongs, the rare conversation where no one is trying to win, defend, or prove anything. David seems to have something like that in mind when he writes how good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony. Good and pleasant. He doesn't begin by telling us why unity is necessary. He simply stops long enough to admire it. The images David uses are to an extent foreign to us now, but are still clear enough that we can get the idea. Unity is like precious oil poured over Aaron's head, running down his beard and onto his robes. It's like the dew of Mount Herman falling on the mountains of Zion. Both images carry something more than the sum of their parts abundance, refreshment, something given freely from above. And then David wraps up his thought with For there the Lord has appointed the blessing, life everlasting. There's something about God's people living together in harmony that makes room for blessing. Not because unity earns God's favor, but because unity reflects the way his people were meant to live. We were never created to experience the life of God in isolation. The heart of Psalm one hundred thirty three makes Jesus' prayer in John seventeen feel even more beautiful. When he asks the Father to make his people one, he isn't asking for something artificial. He's praying for something good, something that resembles the life of God and becomes a visible expression of his grace. We all know how quickly division can become normal. A disagreement becomes a distance, a difference becomes a suspicion, and before long, people who once worship side by side can begin to feel like strangers. Psalm one hundred thirty three invites us to remember another possibility. There is goodness in belonging to one another. There is a blessing in choosing peace over pride, relationship over preference, and love over the need to be right.

Unity is not merely something the church needs. It is life with God. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. Where might I be missing the beauty of unity? Because I'm more focused on what divides us. Father, thank you for the gift of your people.

Teach me to see the beauty of unity, to value the people you've placed around me, and to become someone who makes room for peace, patience, and love.
