Today I'm reading John seventeen, verses twenty through twenty six. I'm praying not only for these disciples, but also those I'm praying not only for these disciples, but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one, as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me, and that you love them as much as you love me. Father, I want these whom you've given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began. O righteous Father, the world doesn't know you, but I do, and these disciples know that you sent me. I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them. Jesus knew exactly who was standing around him when he began to pray. He knew their names, their weaknesses, their fears, and the ways they would soon struggle to understand what was happening. He's been praying for the disciples gathered around him, and then his prayer extends beyond the room. I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word. He's praying for people who are not yet there. He's praying for generations of believers who have not yet been born. He's praying for the church. And what does Jesus ask the Father to give us? He doesn't begin with comfort, influence, or protection from every difficulty. He prays that we would be one. May they all be as one as you are in me and I am in you. That is the true picture of Christian unity. Jesus is not simply asking that his followers learn to tolerate one another or agree on everything. He points to the relationship between the Father and the Son. The unity of his people is meant to reflect something of the life of God Himself. And there is even a greater purpose beyond this unity. Jesus says that the world may believe that the Father sent him. Our life together is meant to tell the truth about Jesus. It shows unity is more than just a pleasant ideal. It becomes part of our witness. The church does not exist as a collection of people who happen to believe the same things. We've been gathered into something larger than ourselves. Different stories, personalities, backgrounds, and gifts are brought together around one Lord. And Jesus prayed for that people before we ever knew we were part of them. Our place in God's family was on Jesus' heart before it was ever on ours. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. Teach me to treasure the people you've gathered into your church, and make my life a reflection of the unity that you desire for your people.
