Today I'm reading Psalm sixty seven verses one through four. May God be merciful and bless us, may his face smile with favor upon us. May your ways be known throughout the earth, your saving power among people everywhere. May the nations praise you, O God, yes, may all the nations praise you. Let the whole world sing for joy, because you govern the nations with justice, and guide the people of the whole world.

Blessing is easy to misunderstand.

We often think of it as something that ends with us. Good health, meaningful work, faithful friendships, daily provision. We thank God for these gifts and rightly so. But Scripture has a way of reminding us that God's blessings were never meant to stop with the one who receives them. Psalm sixty seven begins with words that echo number six. May God be gracious to us and bless us, may He make his face shine upon us. But the Psalmist doesn't stop there, so that your way may be known on all of the earth, your salvation among all nations. God's blessing is never merely about our comfort. His grace is meant to become a testimony. His kindness is meant to point beyond itself. The God who turns his face towards his people also sends them into the world bearing witness to his goodness. Jesus praised that same vision in John seventeen. He asks the Father to keep his disciples, not by removing them from the world, but by sustaining them within it. Their lives would become a living testimony to the one who sent them. Perhaps that's worth remembering whenever we ask for God's blessing. His gifts are certainly meant to be enjoyed. His peace is meant to steady us. His presence is meant to comfort us. But none of those things are meant to terminate with us. They're invitations to reflect his grace wherever he's placed us. God's care has always had a purpose greater than our own security.

He keeps his people so that the world might come to know him. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with How might God's faithfulness in my life become an invitation for someone else to know him? Father, thank you for your grace and faithfulness.
