Prayed For – 8 | 1 Peter 1:3–9

Today I'm reading first Peter one verses three through nine. All praise to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by His great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance, an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold, though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. You love him even though you've never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him, and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.

The reward for trusting him will be salvation of your souls. I've not really ever considered the difference between a hope and a wish.

They're certainly different in my head, but I don't think I could have expressed the difference without some time to think beforehand. Given that time I might have put it this way. We wish for things that might happen, and we hope in things that we believe will happen. The stronger the promise, the steadier the hope. Peter writes to believers whose lives have become anything but comfortable. Many have been scattered from their homes. Some faced rejection because of their faith. Others wondered what following Jesus would cost them next. Yet Peter begins not with their hardships, but with their hope. He praises God for giving them a new birth and living hope for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This hope is alive because Christ is alive. It's not built on changing circumstances or uncertain outcomes. It rests solely on the risen Savior. Peter goes on to describe an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. Then he adds something just as remarkable. Not only is the inheritance being kept, but God's people are being guarded by God's power through faith. God is watching over both the promise and the people. This doesn't erase suffering. Peter acknowledges that believers may experience grief in various trials. Faith is tested, hearts grow weary, questions linger longer than we'd like. And still Peter insists that suffering does not have the final word. The same God who keeps our inheritance is also keeping us. This is the root of why Christian hope is different from optimism. Optimism depends on circumstances improving. Hope depends on the character of God. We will all face seasons when it feels as though everything around us is uncertain. Relationships changing, health faltering, plans unraveling, yet beneath all of those shifting realities remains a promise that cannot be shaken. The future God has prepared for his people is secure, and until that day comes, he is faithfully keeping those who belong to him.

Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. What uncertainty in my life needs to be seen through the lens of God's living hope? Father, thank you for the living hope you've given through the resurrection of Jesus.
