Today I am reading Psalm one twenty one.

I look up to the mountains. Does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let you stumble. The one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you. The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. In our modern context, so much of life is connected, yet it's easier than ever to feel alone. So the reassurance that someone is with you and cares for you is worth its weight in gold. Like a child waking from a nightmare and finding that their parent heard their cry and came to their rescue. Nurses moving quietly through hospital rooms while others sleep. Firefighters, police officers, and countless others keep watch while the rest of the world rests. Their presence can remind us that we're not alone. Psalm one hundred twenty one paints a similar picture, but on a far greater scale. The Psalm begins with a question I lift my eyes toward the mountains, where will my help come from? The answer comes quickly. My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. Then the Psalm settles it into a rhythm. He will not let your foot slip. He will watch over you while you slumber. The protector of Israel does not slumber or sleep. The repetition slows us down and reminds us that God's care is not occasional or uncertain. He doesn't become distracted, he doesn't look away. He never grows tired of watching over his people. That doesn't mean life will always be easy. The Psalm never promises a path without steep climbs or uncertain footing. Instead it points us to the one who remains faithful throughout every step of the journey. Jesus knew the disciples belonged to the Father. He knew that his care didn't depend on changing circumstances or the strength of those he was keeping. It rested entirely on his own unchanging faithfulness. There's going to be days when your faith feels steady, and there's going to be days where it feels fragile. The good news of Psalm 121 is that God's watchfulness is not measured by the strength of our grip on him. It's measured by his unwavering grip on us.
