Today I'm reading John seventeen, verses six through nineteen. I have revealed you to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything I have is a gift from you, for I've passed on to them the message you gave me. They accepted it, and know that I came from you, and they believe you sent me. My prayer is not for the world, but for those you've given me, because they belong to you. All who are mine belong to you, and you've given them to me so they bring me glory. Now I'm departing from the world. They're staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you've given me your name. Now protect them by the power of your name so they will be united just as we are. During my time here I protected them by the power of the name you gave me. I guarded them so that no one was lost except for the one headed for destruction, as the scriptures foretold. Now I am coming to you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world so they would be filled with my joy. I have given them your word, and the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I am not asking you that take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Make them holy by your truth. Teach them your word which is truth. Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world, and I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them, so they can be made holy by your truth.

The comfort of being known by someone who also feels responsible for your well being is near incomparable.

A good parent never really stops watching over their children. A close friend notices when something isn't right before anyone else does. Love has a way of remaining attentive. It doesn't cling tightly, but neither does it walk away. As Jesus continues his prayer, his attention turns toward his disciples. He speaks of those the Father has given to him, not as followers who have earned their place, but as people who belong to God. Again and again Jesus uses language of keeping, guarding, and belonging. I have guarded them, he says. Holy Father, protect them by your name, he prays. Jesus does not ask the Father to remove his disciples from the world. He specifically says, I am not praying that you take them out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil one. The answer to fear is not to escape. It's God's presence in the middle of it. We would gladly choose fewer hardships, fewer disappointments, fewer reasons to feel uncertain. Yet Jesus knows his followers will face all of those things. What he asks for instead is that they would be kept. To be kept is more than just being kept safe. It's to be held securely in the Father's care. It's the confidence that we never face this world alone because the one who called us also watches over us. Life has a way of making us feel exposed. Circumstances change, people disappoint us, our own strength rises and falls. But before the disciples ever stepped into a hostile world, Jesus had already prayed for them, and the Father had already set his love upon them. That same confidence belongs to us. We don't walk through life trying to persuade God to care for us. We begin with the assurance that Christ has already entrusted us to the Father's faithful hands.

Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with Where am I trying to protect myself instead of resting in the Father's care? Father, thank you that I am never beyond your care.
