Today I'm reading Isaiah forty two verses six through eight. I, the Lord have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them, and you will be a light to guide the nations. You will open the eyes of the blind, you will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons.

I am the Lord, that is my name. I will not give my glory to anyone else, nor share my praise with carved idols. We all live for something. It's not always a conscious thing, but everyone has something.

For some it's success, others security, approval, comfort, or control. We rarely call those things idols, but they shape our decisions, our hopes, and even our disappointments. Whatever captures our hearts eventually begins to direct our lives. Isaiah records God saying, I am the Lord, that is my name, and I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols. The force behind those words can come across as unsettling to some. The reasoning should be clear, though. God knows something we are prone to forgetting. We become like what we worship. When we give our lives to things that can't last, they eventually leave us empty. Achievement fades, possessions wear out. Even the people we love can't carry the weight of being our greatest hope. Created things make wonderful gifts, but they're poor gods. God refuses to share his glory because there's no one and nothing like him. His glory is not built on status or power alone. It's the fullness of his holiness, his goodness, his mercy, his justice, and his love. To give his glory to another would be to point us towards something less than what is ultimately true and beautiful. The invitation is not merely to admire God's glory, but to let it reorder our lives. Every day, we're choosing what will receive our attention, our trust, and our affection. Worship is happening whether we realize it or not. We all become like what we live for. When God remains at the center, everything else finds its proper place.

Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. What has been quietly competing for my heart's deepest trust? Lord, forgive me for the ways I've looked to lesser things to give me life, identity, or security.
