Today I'm reading Hebrews one verses one through four. Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets, and now in these final days he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son He created the universe. The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleanses us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. This shows us that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. As the image bearers of God, we thrive in creating, and you can learn a lot about someone by the things that they make. An artist, for example, spend enough time looking at their gallery, and before long, you begin to recognize something of the artist. Particular colors return, certain themes emerge, their fingerprints are everywhere. But even the finest painting can't tell you everything about the person who painted it. Eventually, if you really want to know the artist, you have to meet them. Scripture tells us that God has always been making himself known. Hebrews begins by reminding us that long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. God was not silent. Through prophets and promises, commandments and covenants, he revealed his character and his purposes. Each word was true and each revelation mattered. But then the writer of Hebrews says something extraordinary. In these last days he's spoken to us by his son. Jesus was not simply another messenger carrying a word from God. He was the radiance of God's glory and the exact expression of his nature. The God Moses longed to know has made himself known in the Son. Jesus didn't merely tell us what the Father was like, he shows us. That means when we watch Jesus welcome the overlooked, we're seeing the heart of God. When he touches the unclean, confronts hypocrisy, forgives sinners, and weeps beside a grave. We're not watching someone soften the image of a distant God. We are watching God's character made visible. Even more remarkably, Hebrews says the one who reveals God is also the one who made the universe, sustains all things by his word, and provided purification for our sins. The glory of God is not revealed only in Christ's power, but also in his willingness to give himself for us. We can spend an entire lifetime wondering what God is like. We can build an image of him from our experiences, fears, disappointments, or assumptions. But Hebrews gives us somewhere better to look. Look at Jesus. In him the God we long to know has come near enough to be seen. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. Where have my experiences or assumptions shaped my view of God more than Jesus has? Jesus, when my understanding of God is clouded by fear, disappointment, or assumption, turn my eyes back to you. Help me see the Father more clearly through your life, your character, and your love.
