Prayed For – 1 | John 17:1–5

Today I'm reading John seventeen verses one through five. After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you've given him. And this is the way to have eternal life, to know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. I brought you glory here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began. There are a number of questions that reveal what matters most to a person. Ask someone about their favorite vacation and you'll learn where they've been. Ask them about the future, and you'll hear what they're hoping for. Listen carefully to someone's prayers, and before long you'll understand what fills their heart. John seventeen gives us that kind of moment. We're invited to listen as Jesus prays to his Father on the night before the cross. Knowing what lay ahead, he could have prayed about the suffering he was about to endure, or the fear his disciples would soon face. Instead, his thoughts are drawn to something greater. He speaks about glory, but he doesn't stop there. Jesus tells us what eternal life really is, that they know you, the only true God and the one you sent, Jesus Christ. Those words are familiar to many of us, but they're easy to misunderstand. We often think of eternal life as something waiting for us after death, as though it were mainly about a destination. Jesus speaks of it as relationship. Eternal life is not simply life that lasts forever. It's life lived in fellowship with the Father through the Son, and it begins long before heaven. That can help us understand why Jesus begins the prayer with glory. Throughout John's gospel, glory is never separated from revealing the Father. Jesus glorifies the Father by making him known, and the Father glorifies the Son so that we might see him for who he truly is. God's desire has never been to merely rescue us from sin. It has always been to bring us into his life. It can be easy to forget that. We often measure spiritual growth by what we know, accomplish, or even how faithfully we serve. Jesus measures it differently. Before he prays for protection, unity, or mission, he reminds us that the greatest gift the Father offers is himself. Knowing God is not the reward at the end of Christian life.

Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. As I listen to Jesus' prayer again this week, deepen my desire to know you above all else. May that relationship become the source of my life, my joy, and my hope.
