Before It Gets Better – 8 | Isaiah 9:1–7

Today I'm reading Isaiah nine verses one through seven. Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Neftali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light, for those who live in a land of deep darkness a light will shine. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice. They will rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, and like warriors dividing the plunder. For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor's rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian. The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders, and he will be called wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven's armies will make this happen. One detail stands out to me as I read Isaiah nine. Isaiah speaks about the light before he tells us where the light is coming from. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. This is another familiar passage that's read commonly during Advent and Christmas. But the child isn't introduced for several verses, for unto us a child is born. Why might Isaiah tell the story that way? Why begin with the light? Perhaps it's because that's often how God works. Long before we understand what he's doing, we begin to notice his presence. Hope appears before all of our questions are answered. Light breaks through before we can ever explain where it's coming from. That was certainly true for Isaiah's first audience. They didn't know when God's promises would be fulfilled. They couldn't yet see the king Isaiah was describing. They simply received the promise that light was coming. And it's only later that Isaiah reveals its source, a child. Not an army or a political victory, not a sudden end to hardship, a child whose kingdom has no end. Isaiah doesn't rush to Bethlehem. He let his audience sit with the light for a while before showing the one who carries it. Hope often arrives the same way. We begin to recognize God's faithfulness before we can trace all the ways he's been at work. Looking back, we see what we couldn't see at that time.

The light had already begun to dawn. We just didn't know its name yet. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. Where have I seen glimpses of God's light before I understood what he was doing? Father, thank you that your work often begins long before I recognize it.
