Today I'm reading Psalm forty six. God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come, and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam, let the mountains tremble as the waters surge. A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the most high. God dwells in that city, it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day God will protect it. The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble. God's voice thunders and the earth melts. The Lord of Heaven's armies is here among us. The God of Israel is our fortress. Come see the gracious works of the Lord. See how he brings destruction upon the world. He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear, he burns the shields with fire. Be still and know that I am God. I will be honored by every nation, I will be honored throughout the world. The Lord of Heaven's armies is here among us.

The way Psalm forty six opens sort of feels more like the ending of many Psalms. That bold declaration praising God despite the troubles of life. God is our refuge in strength, and ever present help in trouble. Only after making that statement does the psalmist describe the world coming undone. Mountains fall into the sea, oceans roar, nations rage, kingdoms totter. It's one image after another, each one painting a picture of instability. If the point is that God is our refuge, why spend so much time describing everything that could go wrong? As we've spent so much time discussing, faith isn't built by pretending the chaos isn't real. The Psalm never minimizes the trouble, it gives it language, it lets us picture it. Only then does it return our attention to the one who remains unmoved. The Lord of Heaven's armies is here among us, the God of Israel is our fortress. That refrain appears twice, not because we forget God after years of comfort, because we forget him in moments of fear. The safest place in this psalm isn't a mountain or within the city walls, it's the presence of God Himself. This passage also contains a line that we're very familiar with Be still and know that I am God. I've often imagined those words as an invitation for us to quiet our own anxious hearts, and maybe they are. But in the flow of the Psalm, they're spoken while the earth shakes and the nations rage. God's command isn't dependent on circumstances. His sovereignty is already established before the noise subsides. That's the movement of Psalm forty six.

Not from chaos to calm, but from chaos to peace with the God who's never stopped raining. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. Where do I instinctively run when life feels unsteady? And what does that reveal about where I believe my refuge is? Lord, when life feels uncertain, remind me that you are not. Teach me to find my refuge in your presence rather than in circumstances I cannot control.
