Today I'm reading John sixteen, verses twenty five through thirty three. I've spoken of these matters in figures of speech, but soon I'll stop speaking figuratively, and will tell you plainly all about the Father. Then you will ask in my name. I'm not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf, for the Father Himself loves you dearly because you love me, and believe that I came from God. Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and I will leave the world and return to the Father. Then his disciples said, At last you're speaking plainly and not figuratively. Now we understand that you know everything, and there's no need to question you. From this we believe that you came from God. Jesus asked, Do you finally believe? But the time is coming, indeed it is here now when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I've told you all this that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you'll have many trials and sorrows, but take heart, because I've overcome the world.

In just a few moments, Jesus will leave the upper room and begin the walk towards Gethsemane. Before the night is over, Judas will arrive, Peter will deny knowing him, and every one of the disciples will scatter. Jesus knows all of this. The disciples don't. Knowing what's coming, Jesus doesn't spend his final moments trying to answer every question they have. Instead he prepares them for what lies ahead. I have said these things to you that in me you may have peace. Jesus speaks about peace before he speaks about trouble. The very next sentence is one many of us know by heart. In this world you'll have trouble, but take heart, I've overcome the world. Those ideas don't really seem to belong together. We tend to think of peace as something that arrives once trouble is past, but Jesus places peace before it, before the confusion, before the grief, before the disciples understand what God is doing. The peace Jesus offers was never meant to depend on circumstances. He doesn't promise that life becomes easier. He promises that in him his followers can have peace even as the storm begins to gather. It's tempting to believe that peace is waiting for us on the other side of hardship. If we can just make it through this season, maybe we'll be able to rest. Jesus says something different. Peace isn't simply the destination. It's a gift he gives his people for the journey. That doesn't make trouble any less real. Jesus never minimizes it, he promises it. But neither does he allow trouble to become your defining reality. His final words aren't you will have trouble. They're take heart, I've overcome the world. The disciples won't fully understand those words until much later, and sometimes neither will we. But perhaps that's why Jesus speaks them now. He knows that there are some promises we need before we ever know we need them.

When life feels uncertain, teach me to rest in Christ rather than changing circumstances. Help me take heart because he has already overcome the world.
