This reflection introduces the foundation of bold faith by reminding believers that Jesus has opened the way into God’s presence. Because Christ is our compassionate High Priest who understands human weakness and has secured our access to the Father, we can approach God with confidence rather than fear or hesitation.

Today I'm reading Hebrews four verses fourteen through sixteen. So then, since we have a great high priest who has entered heaven, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This high priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all the same testings we do. Yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we most need it. This week we're taking a quick break from the Abide Series. I spent the better part of the last month or two trying to figure out what to do with this mini series. I still didn't know until just about a week ago. I've been in a bit of a funk for a while, and the last few weeks have really taken a toll. One may think surely you learned how to handle this sort of thing last time you made it through this. I'm sorry to report that I still relate very much to Paul's famous line I do what I do not want and I do not do what I want. I did, however, get there eventually. I set aside a time of solitude and some very intense prayer. After much lament, followed by some rest and clarity, it came to me. How long did it take me to understand what the author of Hebrews meant by come boldly before the throne? Arguably I still don't know very well considering how long it took me to get there this time, but this is such a clear call to me. What does Scripture say about this? Are there examples? You bet there are. And this week we're going to take a look at a few of them. I hope this is going to be a useful tool for you, and I hope that you see the not so subtle tie-ins to abide, even today as we're starting the series. The confidence Hebrews describes is not confidence in ourselves, it's confidence in the one who welcomes us. Because Jesus has gone before us, we no longer approach God as strangers hoping to be accepted. We come as people invited into his presence. Jesus is the whole point. The Son of God has made a way for the mercy and grace that were promised since before we ever had a chance to receive it. A gift too good to be true held on offer with open hands. He is the only reason we can approach the throne with boldness, with confidence. The great high priest who joined us in life and sympathizes with us, who faced all the temptations we see, who experienced the weakness of being human, who conquered death and rose again is now seated at the throne once again. He ratified this new covenant with his sacrifice. If we're not abiding in him, it can be easy to lose sight of that. So hold fast to your faith, abide in him, and approach with confidence. As this week begins, that invitation becomes the foundation for everything that follows. Whether we bring grief, shame, questions, doubts, or fears, the direction remains the same. Come near.

Not because we've earned the right, but because Jesus has made a way. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with What keeps me from approaching God with confidence? Jesus, thank you for making a way into the Father's presence.

Help me bring every part of my life to you with honesty and confidence, trusting that I'm welcomed because of your grace.
