This reflection shows that abiding is not only about personal transformation, but about living outwardly from the life and presence of God within us. It invites us to consider how the Spirit may be leading us to reflect Jesus’ love, courage, and faithfulness more intentionally in the world around us.

“May the Lord bless you and keep you — and may His presence guide you this week.”

Today I'm reading Acts two, verses fourteen through twenty one. Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem, make no mistake about this. These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o'clock in the morning is much too early for that. No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel. In the last days, God says, I will pour out my spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my spirit even on my servants, men and women alike, and they will prophesy. And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs in the earth below, blood and fire and clouds of smoke. The sun will become dark and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Beginnings take all sorts of different shapes and sizes. Some are violent and dramatic, an explosion of new life at the cost of what once was. Others are not so dramatic. A conversation that changes direction. A decision reshapes the future. Something begins quietly, and only later do you realize you were standing at the start of something much larger than you understood. Peter's sermon stands in a moment like this. The disciples had spent years following Jesus. They learned from him, watched him suffer, witnessed his resurrection, and heard his promises about the coming spirit. Then in Jerusalem, everything Jesus had prepared them for begins to unfold. Peter stands before the crowd and points back to the words of the prophet Joel. In the last days God says, I will pour out my spirit on all people. The promise is expansive. God's presence would no longer be experienced by only a few people at particular moments. The Spirit would dwell within his people, empowering ordinary men and women to participate in his work. That becomes a fitting place to end this part of the journey through abiding. From the beginning of the series, Jesus has been inviting his followers into connection with him. From the image of branches remaining in the vine, to love taking shape in relationships, faithfulness enduring difficulty, and the spirit sustaining life within God's people. Remaining connected to Jesus gradually reshapes the way we live in the world around us. His life begins producing fruit. His love begins moving through relationships. His presence begins giving courage, wisdom, and strength for whatever he places in front of us. A branch connected to a healthy vine does not hold life for itself. Life continues moving outward. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with. God, thank you for inviting me into life with you and filling your people with your spirit. Help me remain connected to Jesus and live from the life you continue to grow within me. Use me to reflect your love and presence wherever you lead me.
