Today I'm reading first Samuel eighteen, verses one through four. After David had finished talking with Saul, he met Jonathan, the king's son. There was an immediate bond between them, for Jonathan loved David. From that day on, Saul kept David with him and wouldn't let him return home. And Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, because he loved him as he loved himself. Jonathan sealed the pact by taking off his robe and giving it to David, together with his tunic, sword, bow, and belt.

People connect through similar stories, personalities, circumstances, or seasons of life. There's nothing wrong with that, but relationships built only on what's easy or beneficial often struggle when circumstances begin to change. The friendship between Jonathan and David develops differently. After David's victory over Goliath, Scripture says that Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. Their friendship quickly becomes marked by something deeper than admiration or shared success. Jonathan then does something unexpected. He removes his robe, his tunic, and even his weapons and gives them to David. Those details carry great significance. Jonathan was the son of the king and heir to the throne. The clothing and weapons represented position, status, and future inheritance. His actions reflected more than generosity. They expressed loyalty and covenant commitment. Jonathan chooses relationship over self protection. He willingly loosens his grip on what might have benefited him personally for the sake of someone else. Love shaped by God often moves in that direction. Much of our natural instinct pushes us toward preserving comfort, protecting status, or maintaining control. But abiding begins forming a different posture. Remaining connected to Jesus gradually teaches us to hold ourselves with open hands. That doesn't mean ignoring wisdom or healthy boundaries. It does mean that love becomes less centered on what we gain and more attentive to how we serve. Some of the strongest relationships in life are not built on convenience.

They're built through faithfulness, trust, and the quiet decision to remain committed, even when it carries a cost. Before I close in prayer, here's a question to wrestle with.

Shape my relationship through your love and teach me to value faithfulness over convenience, giving over grasping, and commitment over comfort.
