“May the Lord bless you and keep you — and may His presence guide you this week.”
Today I'll be reading Hebrews four, verses fourteen through sixteen. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. It can feel natural to pull back, to enact a strategic retreat when we're overwhelmed or unsettled. When we're struggling, uncertain, or aware of our own shortcomings, distance can feel easier. It creates space. It avoids exposure. It allows us to feel like we can manage things from a bird's eye view. And while there may be times where this is true and necessary, the invitation of Scripture moves in a different direction. Hebrews describes Jesus as our great high priest, one who has passed through the heavens and now stands in the presence of God on our behalf. He's not distant from human experience. He understands weakness. He's faced temptation. He knows what it is to live within the limits of what we feel. That changes how we can approach God. We're not coming to someone who's removed or unaware. We're coming to one who understands fully and remains present. Because of that, the writer gives us a clear encouragement. Let us approach God's throne of grace with confidence. Confidence is not the same as self-assurance. It's not based on having everything together. It rests on who Jesus is and what he has made possible. The throne we approach is described as a throne of grace, not of judgment or of distance, grace, and at that throne something is given. Mercy for what's already happened and grace for what comes next. Peace deepens here, not just in releasing anxiety or trusting God with the future, but in learning to draw near consistently, to bring our lives into His presence without hesitation, to trust that what we'll find there is not rejection but help. The instinct to pull back can be so strong, but the invitation of the one who sits on the throne is ever present and filled with love.
