This reflection shows that the story of Jesus did not end with the resurrection but continues through His people as they are sent into the world. It invites us to see ourselves as part of that ongoing story, stepping forward in the calling He has given.

Today I'll be reading Acts chapter one, verses six through eleven. So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom? He replied, The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere. In Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. After saying this he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white robed men suddenly stood among them. Men of Galilee, they said, why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go. Some stories end cleanly. Everything resolves, the final scene settles, and the outcome is clear. John's gospel does not end that way. Instead it closes with a reflection. John reminds us that what has been written is only part of the story. There's more that could be told, more that was seen and more that was experienced. The story of Jesus is not small. It's not contained to a few moments or even a single book. What we have is true, but it's not exhaustive. It points beyond itself. And then Acts picks up where the gospels leave off. The disciples are gathered with Jesus once more. They ask a question that sounds familiar. Lord, is it time for you to restore the kingdom of Israel? Even now they're still trying to understand the timing and the shape of what Jesus is doing. Jesus redirects them. He doesn't give them a timeline, he gives them a calling. They'll receive power, they'll be witnesses, and the story will move outward. Then he ascends. Not as an ending, but as a transition. The same Jesus they've walked with is now sending them forward. As they stand there looking to the sky, they're told that this is not the end of the story. It's the beginning of what comes next. That moment carries on into our lives. The resurrection was not simply something to witness, it was something to step into. The disciples were not meant to stay where they were, they were sent. The story of Jesus is still unfolding. Not because anything is unfinished in him, but because his work continues through his people. Help me to see where you are at work and give me the courage to step into it. Lead me as I follow you into what comes next.
