The Word Before the World | John 1:1–5
Welcome to the kickoff of the Waypoint Devotional Podcast.
In this first devotional from our Come and See series, we begin at the very start of John’s Gospel — before Bethlehem, before creation — to discover that Jesus is more than a baby in a manger. He is the eternal Word who spoke the universe into existence, the Creator who brings light into our darkness.
Together we’ll reflect on John 1:1–5 and wrestle with this question: Is Jesus the first and final Word in my life, or just a part of my story?

“May the Lord bless you and keep you — and may His presence guide you this week.”
This week begins our journey through the Gospel of John by zooming out to the very beginning—before the manger, before creation—where we discover that Jesus is the eternal Word who made all things and entered our world to bring light and grace.
Day 1 – The Word Before the World
Scripture Reading: John 1:1–5
Big Idea: Jesus is the eternal Word who brings light into our darkness.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
I once asked my son where he thought Jesus was before Christmas. He looked confused for a second, then shrugged and said, “He was waiting for Mary to have Him.”
It’s a fair assumption. That’s how most of us treat Jesus—starting His story at the manger. But John opens his Gospel in a very different way. He rewinds past Bethlehem, past the prophets, past Abraham, all the way back to “In the beginning.” And there, John says, Jesus already was.
Not only was He present at creation—He was the Creator. Everything made was made through Him. And He’s not just the Maker—He’s the light. A light that shines in the darkness, and no matter how deep the darkness, it cannot overcome Him.
Maybe your week is starting with chaos, uncertainty, or questions. This same Jesus who was at the beginning is here now, speaking over the void, still bringing order and light.
Reflect:
- What does this passage tell me about God?
- What does this reveal about me or humanity?
- What’s the question to wrestle with?
Is Jesus the first and final Word in my life, or just a part of my story?
Did You Know? The Greek word for "Word" is Logos, which in ancient philosophy referred to both divine reason and the creative logic of the universe. John is declaring that Jesus is the source of all meaning.
Quote:
"The gospel begins not with a birth, but with a cosmic claim: Jesus is God." — N.T. Wright
Prayer:
Jesus, help me let Your voice be the first and final word in my day.

What would change if you truly believed Jesus was present at your beginning?
